Translating the Field: Music, Power, Praxis

This past weekend I returned to Austin, Texas, and the University of Austin, where I completed my doctoral degree in ethnomusicology, to attend and present research at a symposium on “the multilingual intersections of music, sound, performance, and ethnography.” The Translating the Field symposium featured music scholars from all around the world — both sides of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans — and their work, which will be compiled into a forthcoming volume. My presentation, titled “Gaps, Bridges, & Breaks; or the Affordances and Refusals of Global Jazz,” was related to my ongoing book project and featured excerpts of interviews with André Carvalho, Hafez Modirzadeh, Mali Obomsawin, and Luciana Souza. I’d like to thank them for their continued support of my projects. I’ve included links below to their latest releases.
